Sort and filter with drop-down list

    Hi
I'm still very new at Excel, so this might be very simple, but hopefully some of you can help me out.
I have a long list with about 200 names, each one having a value. I know you can sort and filter the list, with the "sort and filter" feature in the "Data" menu. But i want to make it easy for everyone with a drop-down list. Like if i want to send it to my friend, he can easily use my list without any experience with Excel.
I want a drop-down list, where i can sort it by highest value or alphabetic or maybe even a custom order like "My top 10 favorites" or something. Also i want to be able to filter it, so it only shows a specific value like 10 or a range between 20 and 40.
Is this possible? I'm sorry for my bad english, i hope it's not too confusing what i'm asking for. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Re: Sort and filter with drop-down list

Your written English is good - better, in fact, than most UK natives! And you have even used the apostrophe correctly!
There is only one (repeat) error in your post - when we talk about ourselves we think we are very important and instead of writing i am happy, we have to use upper case and write I am happy

Like you say, everything you want to use is already built into data filter. But we can make it easier for non-Excel users.

How many columns are there in your worksheet which require sorting and filtering together?
Do you understand how "Advanced Filter" works?

Re: Sort and filter with drop-down list

Ahh, thank you, I tend to forget about that
I have to columns. Column B which contains 187 names, and column C which contains values. The values can vary depending on your input.
So I want a drop-down list, that can sort the list however I want. Like if I want to sort it by which name I like the most.
And I want another drop-down list, where I filter it however I want. Like I can hide every number between 10-20, or hide every name starting with a D.
I haven't used the advanced filter before, but for what I can see, it doesn't seem to have the option I am looking for.

    - it can do a lot more than many users realise and you can "mix and match" to get exactly what you want

I will look at this for you and send you something in the next 24 hours.
To give you everything you need we may need to use a little VBA - are you happy with that?

What type of data does column C contain - numbers, currency, dates, times, integers? all these are numbers

    EDIT
Everything you are asking for is already built into the standard auto-filter - so the easiest way would be to create a few macros to put behind buttons pointing them at the standard features and some dropdown boxes.

This is a starting point. Reluctant to do more until I know I am going in the correct direction.
Open the attached file, enable macros and do what it says in red below

Let me know what you think.
