    Lightbulb chart data and placement

    Hello,
i`m struggling to get this graph chart to work.

    I have 3 related questions.

    question 1:
why is the category name listed as $1 through $10 on the chart and
1 to 10 in the data series?
I want it listed as the names in column D.
    question 2:
I would also like this chart on a new sheet within this work book.
    question 3:
I`d like the chart to update as I add new rows to calculate into sheet 1

    Re: chart data and placement

It is difficult to see what you are doing based on a picture. It would be more helpful to upload a small sample file.

Question 1: It is difficult to say from a picture. My first guess is that you have not assigned a range to the horizontal/category axis data for the pie chart. The first thing I would do is to open the Select Data dialog and see what range/values are assigned to the horizontal category axis field. If it is not column D, then Edit this range so that it is pointing to column D.

Question 2: I think these instructions should still apply to 2011, or something very similar: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...1-1d0788ea783f

Question 3: Some say that this is an advantage to "formatting" your source range as a data table. I rarely have cause to use data tables in my work, so I would use a dynamic named range for this http://peltiertech.com/dynamic-charts/

    Re: chart data and placement

My alternative answers for this are from more of a rookie perspective. MrShorty is probably more technically correct, but these work for me.

Q1. Not sure why, but here's the fix. Right click on the category names at the bottom. Click on select data ( this is all in the image below). Then click edit on the Horizontal (axis category labels, which is on the right hand side of the pop-up you'll get, and select the range of names in column D.

Q2. Click on the chart to select it. Ctrl + X to cut. Go to the sheet you want to put it in. Ctrl + V to paste.

Q3. You could do a dynamic range, or, you could just select a larger range for your chart data. You currently have 10 rows. If you know your data is going to top out at twenty rows then you can just select rows 1-20 for your chart. Make sure that your sum at G11 is put in at G21. The blank rows won't show up in the chart until there is data in them.

I hope this helps. If not, the smart people will have something.

Edited to add: Sorry about that surplus picture.
