Okay, Excel is supposed to automatically format into HH:MM when adding times so long as that is the format you have the cell set to. But it isn't!!

For values greater than 24 format as:
[h]:mm
Hard to say much from a picture in a word document.

You claim that you are having trouble with the hh:mm format code. hh:mm formats for "time of day", but it sounds like what you really want is [hh]:mm. the brackets tell Excel that you are looking for "elapsed time" rather than "time of day".
