If cell is blank, use formula

I would like to have a column display today's date only if a certain cell contains any character. If that certain cell is blank I would like then I would like this cell to be blank.

for example: If cell A1 contains any character I would like Cell A3 to output the formula =TODAY(). If cell A1 is blank then I would like cell A3 to also be blank.

I think in order to acomplish this I need the function in cell A3 to look something like this

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I note that you have marked the thread solved, so I'm guessing the solution I provided was what you were looking for.

For future reference, it is not considered good etiquette (at least, I don't consider it good etiquette) to join a forum, ask a question, take the answer, and just vanish into the night. It is generally expected that you will, at least, provide some feedback (for example, it worked), maybe a "thank you" and, ideally, +rep the contributor(s) who helped you.

If that expectation is consistently not met, you may find people become less willing to offer you help or advice.
