    Rookie Conditional Formatting Question

I have a spreadsheet in which column E contains yearly US GDP per capita data going back to 1792. I want it to highlight every year in which the value is less than the previous year (ie, less than the cell above).

With the help of Google, I have found my way to Conditional Formatting>New Rule>Use a formula to determine which cells to format, and have attempted both "=$e3<$e2" and "=$e2>$e3" the outcome of both is that the cell with the higher value is highlighted instead of the lower.

Budget research is hard when your degree is in English and you've earned your keep playing guitar and tending bar for most of your life. I would imagine the answer to my question is perfectly obvious, but whoever answers it will earn my undying gratitude.

Excel 2010, by the way. Thanks again.

Formula looks ok. Can you post a sample workbook?

See workbook and pic of formula attached. As you can see, the cells with the higher values are being highlighted, whereas I want the cells with the lower values highlighted.

Your formula is OK, so make sure that it remains the same (E3<E2), however your applies to range needs to be adjusted so that it reads: =$E$3:$E$226

Pardon my thickheadedness, but I don't know what the applies to range is.

    Re: Rookie Conditional Formatting Question

Select 'Conditional Formatting' > 'Manage Rules' and the 'Applies to:' box will be to the right of the format.
When you change =$E$2:$E$226 to =$E$3:$E$226 the formula will probably change from =$E3<$E2 to =$E4<$E3, just change it back and select 'OK' and 'OK'
