formula to compare the first 6 digits between 2 columns in a sheet with a confirmmessage

I have a workbook with control sheet.

I have column A with 6 digits and column E with 8 digits

between them is Column C which represents a check control that column A first 6 digits is equal the first 6 digits of column E.

If it does not tally then say in that C match "does not match" otherwise" confirm" is both tally

Looking a formula to achieve this

However could explain the use of --infront of if

-- converts LEFT(E2,6) into a number, without that the match will return FALSE.
