COUNTIFS to look for two criteria

I am trying to count for example the number of approvals/denials that occurred in a month. So I have approval/denial in one column and the other column has the date of the decision. I am trying to count the number of approvals that happened is a specific month. can some one please help on the formula. i tried SUMPRODUCT but i cant get it to count approval/denial in a specific month.

Try this to count Approved in June 2017

=COUNTIFS(M:M,"Approved",N:N,">="&DATE(2017,6,1),N:N,"<"&DATE(2017,7,1))
