    Protection

    Hi,
new to the forum and not particularly skilled with Excel...
Usually, in the grade center on blackboard, my students only see their grades and don't have access to the ones of their fellows. However, I need to uploads marks that are on an excel spreadsheet. Ideally, I would like to keep a similar feature. I would love to have everything hidden and when the students type their ID (for example) it reveals only the row containing their marks.
Is it possible (simply) in Excel?
I know I can protect a row with a password, but I'm not sure whether you have to have the mouse hovering over a cell in that protected row to enter the password or if there is a stand alone window.
    thanks

    Welcome to the forum!

You won't be able to get the control you require just with formulae. You would be better off exporting the grades to a platform that does what you require.

Having said this, it's possible to create a dashboard in Excel, but you'd need to give each of your students a unique code to access their results, and it would be quite a faff when you can potentially get the results you need by exporting the Excel data to something else.

    Hello,

    Try
Maintain your records in 1 sheet,
In other sheet, type the enrolement no. and get the marks through vlookup
    then hide 1 sheet.
To attach worksheet Go advanced -> Manage attachments -> Choose file -> Upload
Don't forget to Mention your desired result in the sheet..
There should be sample data only, a lot of data creates confusion.

    Thanks & Regards

    Re: Protection

It's a little bit more complicated than that if you really want to prevent students from seeing each others' grades!

    Re: Protection

Of course, to keep the anonymity I can't use their name, but what if...
Would it work if I were to actually have a column with their names so that they can locate themselves (out of 650+ rows!!) and then I password protect the remaining columns of their own row. I would use their student ID as the password. It's a fair bit of work to enter the password manually, but would that work?
    thanks

    Re: Protection

You can't password protect columns and rows natively in Excel - you would need VBA for that. I don't know how easy it would be, but as a teacher myself who uses Excel all the time, I would not entertain it.

    bummer #2.
I think I will revert back to the simple idea, which is no names and student ID. Not the ideal solution, but pretty much the only one I have available by the sound of it.
thanks for your help and reactivity.

    Re: Protection

Names wouldn't work, anyway, as they are not secure - they all know each others' names!!!

    Keep it simple.

    Re: Protection

Well, you can create a mail merge from an Excel spreadsheet to a Word document, so in theory you could send each student their own bespoke report.

    Re: Protection

Mail merge is simple - it's a hell of a lot simpler than what you asked for here!!!

    Re: Protection

Be aware that excel is not a secure way of storing data. If you give the students access to the file someone with google skills, a minimal amount of know how and the desire/time will get all your grades despite any passwords you put on it as long as the data is stored in the sheet.

I'd want to be pressing a button on my side.

I'd offer a macro but mailmerge has been raised and it probably has you well covered if you give it a go.
If you want something done right... find a forum and ask an online expert.
