Align coloured cell

If I were to merge a number of cells (eg A2:A20) and colour them green is it possible to only colour the right half of cell A2 and/or the left hand side of cell A20?

If you merge them, there is no longer any concept of formatting cell A2 or A20.

If you want to color just half of a cell there is a kludgy way to do it using conditional formatting with data bars. See attached.
