I am wondering if the following is possible, if so, how do I accomplish it.
I am building a spreadsheet for calculating weights of metal pieces for miscellaneous metals production. This could be Stairs, Handrails, Guardrails, Equipment Decks, Bollards, etc.
As an example a set of metal stairs will have multiple metal shapes involved in its construction.
Depending on the metal shape, the weight either comes from a data table (I use VLOOKUP to get the weight/foot), in the description of the pieces (for example W16x31 is 31 lbs/lnft - I use RIGHT(K10,LEN(K10)-FIND("x",K10,1)) where K10 is the cell that would have the W16x31), or for bars and plates, I use the volume of the piece divided by its density.
What I am wondering is if I can have a table that would have the name of the shape in column A and the formula I would use to calculate the weight of that shape in column B, then use a VLOOKUP in the cell I want the weight per foot to calculate to choose the appropriate formula.
I am on Office 365 Version of Excel - I do not know how to change my office version
