I'm testing a simple formula =VLOOKUP(35,I1:J25,2,FALSE) and it comes back and a hyphen (´) is places in front of the formula and that is it. No error and no other info so what's wrong?

Is the cell that the formula is in formatted as Text? If so, change the formatting to General, double click on the cell and press Enter.

By the way, that is not a hyphen, it's an acute accent. A hyphen looks like this: -
