Looking for partial number within text or description

    Hi

I am looking for a formula to look for a partial number within a column on a different sheet.

The description for example: VEHICLE H1007 STUCK WITH OUT DIESEL, but the h1007 is incorrect as the correct number is JTH1007. But sometimes the vehicle in description does not have a letter in front of it ie 1007. Which formula will be more effective to look for 1007 and return JTH1007.

Just to clarify I have quite a few vehicle numbers that are incorrect in the description line.

I have tried a lookup formula but it only works if the vehicle number is correct. Is there another formula I can use.

    Regards
    Louis

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? Nobody wants to have to recreate your data from scratch.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired results are also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

Re: Looking for partial number within text or description

    Hi Louis,

I am coming back on this one. The first version of it pulled only the first string of numbers from the main string.
In the attached file I've added a UDF in column B, that extracts only the string with less then 4 characters, because upon a look on your data the codes needed had less then 4.
In B column is the same formula as in my previous post.

    Hope it helps,
    Paul
