Index / match formula to look up first and last data entry in a row and return values

    Good morning everybody,

I am hoping someone may be able to help write a formula to solve the following problem. I am pretty sure it is a matched index formula, but i cant seem to find one online to help me figure it out, so i am looking to one of you to provide a solution.

It is easiest to explain the formula i am after in the 2 tables below.

What i am trying to do is write a formula for column B (Start Date) and Column C (End Date) that looks up the first and last data entry for each of the companies and returns the corresponding month...

It should look like the second table of the two below.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance

Rather than attach a picture, which we can't work with, it would help if you attached a sample Excel workbook.

To do this, click on Go Advanced (below the Edit Window) while you are composing a reply, then scroll down to and click on Manage Attachments and the Upload window will open. Click on Browse and navigate to (and double-click) the file icon that you want to attach, then click on Upload and then on Close this Window to return to the Edit window. When you have finished composing your post, click on Submit Post.

Please note that the Paperclip icon (Attachments button) does not work on this forum, so don't try to use that.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

I have managed to solve the problem, but thanks for advising on the best way to upload documents for review. I was pulling my hair out yesterday trying to append a table to make sense, so thanks for the help in future.

Do you mind telling me how you solved this one?

I need to find the first non-blank column in a row of data and then return the value in row 1. The Index, Match seems to return the last value

Start your own thread (this one is effectively solved/closed), attach a small sample spreadsheet (10-20 rows of data) and you'll have an answer in minutes...

Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.
