    Cells that automatically change color

    Hi !

I was wondering if anyone could help me.

As you will be able to see I have a column labelled PM - this column has the initials of project managers. When I enter the initials it will automatically fill in a color. This has been done by setting up a rule on "conditional formatting" so that whenever CMS is typed into the PM column it turns orange etc.

I am also wanting the Job no column to automatically change color, based on the color in the PM column. However I am having trouble doing this, as the there are no specific job numbers that are dedicated for each project manager - so I can't set up a condition for it (as far as I am aware, I could be wrong).

    Can anyone please help. Capture.PNG

    Thanks,
    Ollivia

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You can use the same CF formulas for the "Job No." column as the "PM" column. Just make sure that the CF is applied to the "Job No." column.

    Thanks for replying!
As you can see from the image I currently have these as "formulas" as a CF.

Can you please explain a but further the steps I would need to take. What would the "formula" be? What cells do I need to highlight before creating the CF.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Cells that automatically change color

If you apply a new rule to the Job No column, and "use formula" to set colour, then you can use the same criteria as the PM column (for example the formula would be =$C5="RP") This assumes Job column is A and PM is col C. Notice the dollar sign is only in front of the C and not the row number, since that needs to adjust with the row number being formatted.

Re: Cells that automatically change color

I see. You used Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cell Rules > Text that Contains.

This is not your best bet for several reasons. Here is how I would do it using what you already have in place.

    Select the first rule > Edit Rule > Use a formula > =$C1="MB" > OK > Applies to: =$A:$A,$C:$C > OK

Both columns A and C should now be Conditionally formatted based on the value in column C.

    Repeat for all rules.
