Nested If functions

I have a general question.
I am at the moment using Excel 2010 and am considering upgrading to 2016. The 2010 version can accommodate up to 64 nested IFs (I use 12 at the moment). On googling the new 2016 IFS function, I noticed various statements that the number of nested IFs in 2016 has been reduced back to 7 which means I would have to re-do my spreadsheets - they will no longer work if I upgrade since it would appear that 2016 is not backwards compatible.

Is this true?

I've just tried 13 nested IFs in Excel 2016 and it works fine for me.

My question would be what are you using such a cumbersome nested IF for? There's possibly a simpler/more efficient way of accomplishing the same.

Thanks. The IFS function is not available in 2010. I use 12 nested Ifs because the data I am using has 12 different functions relating to age, gender, height and BMR factor - the Henry BMR Equations (2005). If there is a simpler way in 2010...

IFS-function does not replace IF-function. You can still nest as many if-functions in excel 2016 as in 2010. comparing the two separate functions makes no sense.

2016 new functons like IFS not being backward compatible is kind of stating the obvious.. never has there been new functionallity the would work in older versions, that is why there are new versions to introduce new things.
Backward compatiblitiy only assures that functions that were available in 2003 or even earlier versions still work in 2016 version.
So the if function will work exactly the same in 2016 as it did in excel 2010

I think for us to be able to suggest a 'simpler' way, it may be a good idea if you attach a sample workbook along with your current nested IF formula so we can see what it is you're trying to accomplish. Impossible to say whether or not it could be performed in a simpler/better way from the information provided so far.

maybe try with CHOOSE() function. Uses index_num to return a value from the list of value arguments. Use CHOOSE to select one of up to 254 values based on the index number.
