Lookup formula

Hi Guys,

I'm not sure if this is possible due to circular references, but I have two columns A & B

Column B contains a letter entered by the user
Column A contains a number to be calculated by a formula. The number will be the same for each letter entered by the user.

What I'd like to happen is
User enters letter in column B.
Formula in column A takes that values and sees if it has already been used elsewhere in column B. If so it returns the corresponding value from column A.
If not then it returns the max value of Column A + 1

I've attached a picture to illustrate.

Re: Lookup formula

Welcome to the forum! Please take a moment to re-read forum rule #1 and then amend your thread title to something that better explains your problem. Changing your thread title is not optional, which means you must change it. Thanks!

• Use concise, accurate thread titles.
• Your post title should describe your problem, not your anticipated solution.
• Use terms appropriate to a Google search - poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice tell us nothing.
• Responding to a request to change your thread title by doing so is mandatory.

To change a title go to your first post, click EDIT then Go Advanced and change your title.

No help to be offered, please, until the OP complies with this request.

Then provide a sample workbook, not a picture of it.

Re: Lookup formula

I'm afraid that's the best title I can think of. I want to do "a lookup" but don't know what formulas to use. If you can suggest a better one - do let me know.
I don't have a sample workbook since I don't know what the formula is or how to go about creating one.
The picture illustrates the problem with annotations as to what I hope to achieve.

Re: Lookup formula

Firstly, your sample workbook should be a manual mock-up of what you wish to achieve.

Secondly, your title needs to explain the PROBLEM. Ask yourself, "What am I trying to achieve?" The answer is not, "Lookup formula". Why? Because you don't know how to do this, which is why you are asking for help here. So, summarise your requirements in your title, not what you think will be required to solve it (which is wrong, anyway). Think Google search terms.

Actually I find your instruction not to others not to offer me help just because I wasn't able to be more specific in my title to be quite offensive.
It appears that you're a bit of a jobsworth.

Forget it. I'll go to a more friendly forum. Please delete my account.

Re: Lookup formula

That's because our forum rules require it and it is boilerplate text - most people just make the changes requested without any fuss at all. If you don't want to try complying, that's your prerogative, of course. I have given you plenty of hints about how to improve your title. If you want the help, you need to be prepared to provide the information required.

Re: Lookup formula

Wimple, you probably wont see this, but hopefully you come back at least 1 more time.

1. I am sorry you felt offended by Ali's request, it is a standard request we make for all titles that dont clearly state what the problem is. Our reason for that, is because the forum's data base is searchable, and while some might search for a similar title to yours, I believe most would search for something like "search for same value in another column" (suggestion for your title)

2. All forums have rules and all forums expect those rules to be abided by - ours is no different. We try not to be too onerous, but you did agree to abide by the rules when you joined

3. We dont delete accounts/ID's, if you dont want to continue with us (which would be unfortunate for us), then just dont log in any more.

Hopefully this some way to to help you return to us?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you
