Conditionally summing numbers?

Hi,

I'm trying to create a function which could inspect a row, check a date on one column and add the number from another column to a sum if the date falls into a given interval.

For example, let the column X have the dates and the column Y the numbers. And let the condition for the date to be May 2017.

If, say, X1 has the 3rd of May 2017 and Y1 has the number 4, four should be added to the sum. If X2 has the 12th of July 2018 and Y2 has the number 6, thid row should be ignored and the sum stays the same and so on for the remaining rows.

How could I implement a function for this purpose? As far as I know, the COUNTIF(S) function(s) aren't quite suited for this problem.

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!
