Reading files based on a formula...

    Hey everyone,

So first of all, I just joined and this is my first post, so please bear with me!

I have a folder of weekly excel reports that I want to analyze. I want this separate workbook, "the Master", to pull in cells based on the file name. I don't have any issue setting that up, but is there a way to set the filename based off of a calendar? Essentially I want it to fill columns from other excel files whose filename is a date in YYYY-MM-DD format, the day always being an increment of 7. Any helps, ideas, suggestions, or solutions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    X

Hi Xeronii and welcome to the forum,

My thinking is, this is a problem needing a Power Query solution. Power Query is a newer tool that Excel has as an Add-In. You can download it off the net to your 2010 version of Excel. It comes standard in 2016 Excel. Then you would use the Folder option in PQ and somehow select only the correct files. See:

Generally speaking you should be able to pattern this using something like INDIRECT combined with other formulas. There are a number of ways to approach the increment. You could either hard code the start date in the formula or place the start date in a cell someplace, then simply start date + 7x, where x could be row number (starting from a reference to row 1). That would effectively add the n number of days to your start date needed and INDIRECT would be used to create the reference based on this.

As mentioned you may consider an option like Power Query and/or leverage a data model.

Another alternative would be a macro to simply gather data from all the files in a given folder.

Many ways you could handle it, hard to say whats best without more context.
Ways to get help: Post clear questions, explain your overall goal, supply as much background as possible, respond to questions asked of you by those trying to help and post sample(s) files.

    MarvinP and Zer0Cool,

Thank you so much for the quick responses. This may not come as a shock to y'all but my Excel knowledge is limited to the problems I've had to solve before! I will try both of your ideas to see how it goes. Stay tuned!
