    Question How2: IF column a = blank and column b = y, THEN make column a = X and column b = blank

    Using PC and Office 365

In Excel, how do I write the formula for IF column a = blank and column b = y, THEN make column a = X and column b = blank?

    Scenario - I have 2 columns, A and B
When Column A = Blank and Column B = No author listed, I want to make Column A = X and Column B = Blank.

    How do I do this?

    Welcome to the forum!

Not using formulae and functions, I am afraid - you will need VBA. Would you like me to move the thread for you?

When you say "no author listed", do you mean that the cell contains that text, or that it is empty.

You could do it manually by applying auto filters:

Select < blanks > from the filter drop-down on A, then select < No author listed > or < blanks > for column B
Then put an "X" in the first visible cell of column A and delete the contents of the corresponding cell in column B
Then select those two cells and copy then down the remaining visible cells.
Remove the filtering on those two columns.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete
