Question Help with adjusting Index lookup formula to include additional lookup criteria

    Hi all,

I managed to get this array formula to work, which returns the value in column F (Lookup! table) based on two criteria (D3 and D4) on my main worksheet.

Please Login or Register to view this content.
The reason why I am using this formula (and not lookup, sumproduct or else) is because I am trying to lookup multiple values in a table based on the same criteria (see as an example here: "Formula 3. Vlookup multiple matches based on multiple conditions")

Now I am trying to add in another lookup criteria for D5 which should lookup the value in Lookup!C2:C500 and return the same result as the formula above (basically just checking for a 3rd criteria). I've tried this, but it gives me a #Num error :-(

Do you guys have an idea why or what I am doing wrong?
    Many thanks for your help!

Re: Help with adjusting Index lookup formula to include additional lookup criteria

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? However, please give us an indication of the approximate number of rows of data you want the solution to work with (100, 1000, 100,000 or whatever). Please don't attach a picture of an Excel sheet (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

    Hi Glenn,

Sure - there you go! Hope all is clear? Basically just want the formula to also check for the date value in the data (in addition to customer name and project).
    Hope this works...

    Thanks for your help!

Strange looking formula!! Try variants of this one, instead:

    =IFERROR(INDEX(Lookup!F:F,AGGREGATE(15,6,ROW(Lookup!$D$2:$D$500)/((Lookup!$D$2:$D$500=Invoice!$D$3)*(Lookup!$A$2:$A$500=Invoice!$D$4)*(Lookup!$C$2:$C$500=Invoice!$D$5)),ROWS($1:1))),"")

    It is anordinary (non-array) formula.

If I started accepting cyberbeer, or taking part in the Commercial Services section of the EF, it would soon cease to be fun and be mostly about the money. I don't do either... so it doesn't matter (too much) if I foul up totally.
