Understanding a formula

    Hi all,

I got given this formula on a forum and I was very grateful as it works perfectly, however there is one part of it that I don't understand. The formula is:

    =IFERROR((INDEX($C$7:$I$29,MATCH($A34,$A$7:$A$29,0),COLUMN(A:A))*'bed size 1a'!J14*52/1000),"").

The bit I don't understand is the COLUMN(A:A), as the information it is regarding is not in column A, and when this piece of the formula is removed the formula still works exactly the same.

    Thanks

    Re: Understanding a formula

It returns the number 1 (which is column A). The 1 ts then used in the calculation to work out which column you need to draw from in the INDEX range $C$7:$I$29.

Use Evaluate Formula on the Formulas ribbon to step through the formula to see how it works.

Also, if you enter that part in it's own cell, then copy down a few rows and across a few columns, you will see it increments across, but not down.
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
