    Percentage formula

    Hi

    On L3 cell is where I change the discount Id' like to give (anything between 1-20%). When I put 3% to 17% the cell P4 (or P column) is showing 1% more e.g. if I give 17% discount the 'Core profit' on P4 is 4%. Why is it not showing 3% profit? Please help

    Re: Percentage formula

    Pass the crystal ball...

    We need a bit more than that...

    Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? However, please give us an indication of the approximate number of rows of data you want the solution to work with (100, 1000, 100,000 or whatever). Please don't attach a picture of an Excel sheet (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

    Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

    Re: Percentage formula

    At a glance it seems to be about how you're calculating the core profit %. You've currently got;

    Which is equivalent to:

    However, and critically, this does not give +1% on what you're expecting; it only appears that way as you've got column P displaying no decimal places. For 17% in L3, P4 comes out as something like 3.614... and this is the profit (as a percentage of the sale price) you're making if you pay £800 for the item and sell it for £830. You seem to be expecting 3% here, as that would be your profit as a percent of the non-discounted unit price; and if you wanted that then the denominator should be C4.
