How to return associated colomn/raw of a cell in a table when knowing one's cell data

    Hi everyone,
I have a set of datas that stems from a table.
I am trying to figure out how to return the associated column/row of a cell in a table when knowing one's cell data.
I have enclosed a spreadsheet with data values and a table to illustrate that.

Thank you in advance for looking into it; I am stuck and I can't find a way to do it with vlookup and match.
    That would be greatly appreciated,
    Rox

    Re: stuck on a problem.....

Two things. Your title is a bit (totally!!) meaningless. You should change it (think google search terms) by selecting thredad tools at the top of your first post.

Secondly, Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? However, please give us an indication of the approximate number of rows of data you want the solution to work with (100, 1000, 100,000 or whatever). Please don't attach a picture of an Excel sheet (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. It does NOT have to be your real sheet - mock up a SAMPLE if you need to. But not 1000's of rows!!! It makes manual checking so tedious. Whatever you do... make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    2. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    3. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

    Hi Roxy

what if a piece of data in your search criteria(datas available list) has a value that appears twice or more in the table?
you are not using a unique value as a searching parameter and therefore any lookup function you use may be prone to error.

HI Brian, thanks for your comment.
You're right, there is not a unique value as a searching parameter. There are some datas that are appearing in more than 1 cell; however those multiples will be (I think 100% of the time) located in the same row (in case it make its easier to process a search).
I don't need to get from the search function all the cells matching the data, but any cell matching will do.

Re: How to return associated colomn/raw of a cell in a table when knowing one's cell data

    hi Roxy

i have a formula for you and have placed it in the workbook you forwarded.
it is quite complex but it does what you want to an extent.
    0. the formula is in B20.
    1. it will tell you where the matches are by prod and city (in one cell)
    2. it will state empty if an empty cell in your table
    3. duplicates also show the city and prod for each piece of data. (drag formula right)
    4. drag formula down to accomodate check based on data available list.(a20:a31)
    5. THIS IS AN ARRAY FORMULA(CNTRL+SHIFT+ENTER) TO ACTIVATE FORMULA.(i have left it activated and you onyl have to drag to right for the number of times your search item is repeated..it will display your city and product)
    6. if this formula does the job, please mark me up ie. add reputation.
7.mark as solved if it matches your needs.
    8. hope this helps.
