Stop total from continuing numbers in total column

I have a workbook set up like:
Date Category Amount Sub- Total Total

The amount is Column E, the sub is column G and total is in Column I. When I enter an amount in E, it sub totals to G and column I is a running total of all entries. Current formula in I is: =SUM(I2+G3) What do I need to add to I's formula to show no entries after the current sub total. Set up the way I have it, I get a number that continues as far as the formula is continued in that column.

I am a real nubey at excel and know someone on this forum can help me. Thanks.

It would help if you attached a sample Excel workbook, so we can see how your data is laid out.

To do this, click on Go Advanced (below the Edit Window) while you are composing a reply, then scroll down to and click on Manage Attachments and the Upload window will open. Click on Browse and navigate to (and double-click) the file icon that you want to attach, then click on Upload and then on Close this Window to return to the Edit window. When you have finished composing your post, click on Submit Post. Don't try to use the Paperclip icon, as it doesn't work on this forum.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

Thanks for your replies and I'm sorry to be so long getting back to you. Fluff13, I'm sorry your formula doesn't seem to work for my application, or I may not be using it right.
Pete_UK, I've made a simplified example and am attaching it as per your instructions. I'd like to continue the formula below G3 without the total following. I had a formula years ago for what I'm trying to do but forget how I got it.

Your workbook doesn't match your post #1 description, but relative to your workbook do the following:

    In E2 and copied down:
