    Problem with Index/Match Functions

    Hi Everyone!

I have a list of fictitious SIN's, Student #'s, and First and Last names of students.
My job is to create a formula so that when I enter a student's SIN number, their corresponding Student#, First/Last name appear in the 3 cells below,

HOWEVER, I'm not allowed to create different formulas, I can only create one for Student # and use relative cell references to drag and fill the formulas for the First and Last name of the student.

I have attached my file and I hope that someone can help, thank you very much in advance!

    Re: Problem with Index/Match Functions

Hello & Welcome to the Forum,

    In B3 and copied down...

    =INDEX(Personal!$A$2:$C$143,MATCH($B$2,Personal!$D$2:$D$143,0),MATCH($A3,Personal!$A$1:$C$1,0))

BTW: When you say, "I'm not allowed", does this mean you are doing some type of homework. If this is your file, why would you ever say I'm not allowed to do this or that to get the right answer?
    HTH
    Regards, Jeff

    Hello,

Thank you very much Jeff for the quick reply and the help!
Yeah, I should have been more specific in saying that it was for a homework assignment in which they didn't want us to modify the equations.

Just one thing, when I use your formula, the first name section brings up "#N/A", so I'm not sure what the problem is there.

You must ensure A3:A5 on the Search tab match exactly in word to A1:C1 on the Personal tab. There is a space after Name in cell A5.

See post #4 - there is a space after 'First Name' in A5 - remove it.
