    Sheet Yield Formulations for Estimating

My apologies in advance for my heading. It's the best I could think of as a descriptor.

I am wondering if there is a way to complete the following scenario...

I have 5 sizes of plywood I need to cut (numbers taken from an actual customer quote)

    10pcs 23x96
    10pcs 23x30
    10pcs 23x47
    5pcs 47x96
    5pcs 47x34

these need to be cut from 48x96" sheets of plywood

    need to compare two ways...

    1) Need to look at each piece individually and determine how many sheets (or part sheets) are required to cut these components
ie: 23x96 yields 2 pieces per sheet so I need 5 sheets just for these parts, etc.

    2) Is there a way to crunch these numbers and determine the best fit pattern per sheet and have it tell me how many sheets I need to cut ALL these pieces?
ie: result may show (hypothetically...doesn't necessarily apply to the numbers above) that I might get (2) of part 1, (1) of part 2, (3) of part 3 out of 1 sheet, etc.

I suspect I am nearing time to hire a VBS programmer territory but I'll let you tell me that if I'm right.

As always, thanks in advance for any assistance at all.

    Scott

I'm afraid that it's actually much worse than you expect -- this is the Bin Packing Problem (2D), a relatively well-known NP-hard mathematics problem.

Well, the upside is because it's famous, hard, and has lots of real-world use-cases (yours is actually a fairly typical example set), there are a number of software applications that can generate solutions for you.
