Sumproduct formula when source file not open

    Hi All,

I am using Sumproduct formula to pull in data from one Excel file A to another Excel file B. I noticed that if I don't have file A (which has the data) open, then file B (with the Sumproduct formula) does not automatically get updated with new data I have added to to file A. I have to open File A for this to work and it works even if File A is opened by multiple sources and is in read only mode. Is there a way to get File B updated withought having to open File A or is this a limitation of Sumproduct function?

    Thanks!

It's not so much sumproduct() that is the problem, it's just how Excel works. If you reference data in another workbook, that workbook needs to be open in order for the referencing workbook to get the current data.

To get around cases like this I use Power Query to bring the relevant data into the working workbook and reference that data in formulas rather than the closed workbook.
