    solve formula with multiple variables

    Hello all,

First time posting here. I can usually find the answers to my questions when I ask Dr Google but this time I am stumped. I would like to know if it is possible to write a formula that can solve for multiple variables. I guess i have to be clearer (even i dont know what this means!)

Here is my formula x=A*B/(C*D+E*F). I would like to be able to solve for any of the variables as, depending on the situation, any variable could be missing. Is this possible or is excel the wrong program for this?

Re: solve formula with multiple variables

You could solve it algebraically for each variable in terms of the other four, and use that result in Excel.

    Excel doesn't do symbolic algebra.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if it was possible. I guess I will build out the formula for each variable and the techs will have to choose which formula to use. Thanks for the replies.

I might not understand your question fully. We have to solve for x, C or F, depending on the situation. I was asking is it possible to have excel formula that can determine to solution based on inputs. Ie: Each value would be eepresented by a cell. If I populate 6 of the 7 values, excel can work out the solution. It appears that I will have to develop the formula for each equation separately. Thanks for your reply.
