Formula for putting the correct values from 1 spreadsheet to a column of another sheet

Hello! I have only been learning excel for the past week because of a task I need to complete for our admin team so please bear with me for a bit.

I have been working on this excel file for a few days now. My goal for now is to populate the the "Reading check list, last name" column with the last names of kids that are in A1a class.

Researching a bit about excel functions I came across INDEX and MATCH.

Trying it out, I was able to make a working INDEX/MATCH function

    =INDEX (2019_SeptStudentList!$F$5:$F$149,MATCH("A1a",2019_SeptStudentList!$W$5:$W$149,0)

which puts the correct value in the selected column.

I copied the formula to the next cell in the last name column but the value did not change.

    Last name

    Yamada
    Yamada
    Yamada

My question is how can I edit this formula so it points to the next value to MATCH and if it matches inserts the proper value to the next cell down the selected column?

Thank you very much and my apologies if my question is not clear.

Re: Using INDEX/MATCH function to populate a column in my spreadsheet

    Welcome to the forum.

By limiting your title to INDEX MATCH, you are probably limiting the help you will get here. INDEX MATCH may NOT be the most efficient way to solve your problem.

I suggest you amend your title to say what you are trying to achieve, NOT how you assume it should be done.

The attached workbook is very busy - better to cut it down to a simplified version that illustrates just the issue you are trying to resolve.

Thanks for the notice, I'll try to reword my title and clean my worksheet.
