CountIF formula question - Please help!

I'm trying to help my wife with a formula. She needs to count how many people are leasing apartments, which are denoted in the tab "1 - Test". I'm trying to count how many people are in column B. I just labeled everyone with the same name for this example. And then I'm trying to find out how many total units there are, which are in column A. Some are vacant which is the difference between columns A and B. But if you look at my formulas in the dashboard, I'm using the CountIf formula. Both are returning 0 though. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks.

If you are just counting the cells that aren't empty, you can use =COUNTA.

    Use CountA

    v A B C
    1 Project Leased Total
    2 1 - Test =COUNTA('1 - Test'!$B$2:$B$236) =COUNTA('1 - Test'!$A$2:$A$236)
    3

Edit: Guess I was a little slow on this one.
