Formula to get value of last populated cell and +1 to that value?

If column A is marked with an X, the adjacent cell in column B will find the last populated cell in column B and simply +1 to that.

For example: A1 is marked with an X and B1 is HF2056. Column A skips a row so that A3 is marked with an X, B3 would now need to auto fill to be HF2057. If A4 is marked with an X, B4 would need to be HF2058. etc.

Image with faked numbers for example

So how do I formulate it so that if a cell in column A is marked with an X, the adjacent cell in column B will find the last filled cell in B with data and fill in the new number?

I feel like this may be an INDEX or ISBLANK formula but I can't figure it out.

    Thank you in advance!

    Hi ,

Assuming that cell B1 contains a string such as HF2056 , then entering a formula :

    Formula: copy to clipboard

in B2 and copying it down will result in text values such as HF2057 , HF2058 , HF2059 where ever an X is placed in column A.

Note that the formula is an array formula , to be entered using CTRL SHIFT ENTER.
