CLOSEST MATCH/VLOOKUP Multiple Cells? PIZZA EXAMPLE

    Hi lovely people of ExcelForum,

Let's say I have a reference table (we'll use food right now cause I'm hungry) of pizza companies,thick/thin crust, toppings. The outcome of the combination is good/bad.

    Company Crust Toppings Outcome
    Pizza Hut Thick Pepperoni Good
    Pizza Hut Thin Bad
    Dominoes Green Peppers Good
    Papa John's Thick Pineapple Bad

As there are thousands of possible combinations outside of this reference sheet, is there a way to MATCH or VLOOKUP a list of these combinations to only this reference table? If there isn't an exact match, the outcome would be taken from the closest match. For ex if I have Pizza Hut, Thin Crust, Olives -- the closest reference would be Pizza Hut & Thin Crust which would pull the outcome BAD.

Let me know if this makes sense and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

So... "Thin" and "thin crust" match. "Olives" and, well... nothing... also matches. So why not "olives" and ... anything...

I think we need to see realistic and representative data.

    Welcome to the forum

Please attach a sample workbook (not a picture or pasted copy). Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Re: CLOSEST MATCH/VLOOKUP Multiple Cells? PIZZA EXAMPLE

Thank you guys -- I've attached the spreadsheet below.

I'm going to have a list of several combinations that I'd like to find the closest match to and to reference that outcome.

I will have a list with many that have toppings that aren't on the reference table. If the topping is missing from the reference table (ex: Pizza Hut, Thick Crust, Sausage), I'd like to it take the next closest match of Company & Crust (ex: Pizza Hut, Thick Crust)

Not sure if this clears things up or not.

I'd like to avoid adding all the possible combinations to the reference table but if there are any key ones I should be adding to solve my problem, I'm definitely open to it.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: CLOSEST MATCH/VLOOKUP Multiple Cells? PIZZA EXAMPLE

Some further explanation might help as I, at least, am confused by:
Papa John's Thick Pineapple, which seems to me as if it is the closest match to Papa John's Thick, has the outcome of Bad.
Domino's Thick Green Peppers, which seems to me as if it is the closest match to Domino's Thick, has an outcome of Good.
But both Papa John's Thick and Domino's Thick have expected outcomes of Good.
Consider taking the time to add to the reputation of everybody that has taken the time to respond to your query.
