NOOB- trying to use the result of an IF function inside another formula.

Hello and good morning,

Im not brand new to this but it has been a looonngggg time since ive needed the use of excel.

I have the formula =IF(B4="Scotchweld EC9323BA","70",IF(B4="EA9396BA","75",IF(B4="",""))) this formula works perfectly to give me the outcome for cell I4.

However, im trying to use the result whether its 70 or 75 as part of another equation.

e.g

=IF(K4>=I4,"PASS","FAIL")

the formula doesn't work, probably 1. because its incorrect and 2. because excel is seeing I4 as an equation and not a number....??? and is returning the result FALSE everytime

is there another way I can go about this? or am I on the right track, just need some alterations?

Remove the "" from around the numbers in the formula. They convert them to text.

Thanks for the quick reply, I've shortened the original formula down to make it more simple and removed the "" to ensure the number are not converted to text.

=IF(B10="Scotchweld EC9323BA",70,75)

this work and bring the result I want for the first part but the second part is still not working, it comes back with the result #NAME?

Any thoughts?

Whats in K4 and I4?

sorry ive confused it a bit because ive used a different cell.


in I4 the formula is =IF(B4="Scotchweld EC9323BA",70,75)

I then have a number I type from a result I take into cell J4 lets say 69.

so I have then in K4 used the formula =IF(J4<=I4,PASS,FAIL)

so with that I was expecting k4 to have the answer FAIL...…

not sue what im doing wrong because its coming out with #NAME?

Hi, I've done it. I used the formula bar instead =IF(J10>=I10,"pass","fail")
I must have been typing something wrong.

Duhh. Having a bad day. Put quotes round pass and round fail.
