Sorry for off-topic interjection:
Although there is no official rule regarding this behavior, we request that wherever possible both the question AND the answer be provided in substantive detail here within the thread. An attached workbook is an excellent aid for posing a question and offering a solution, but solely doing that with no in thread explanation makes it difficult for researchers to understand or consider the Q & A of this thread without downloading what may be a pointless doc to them, if they can do that at all. Doing that also hides the content from search engines so others may never benefit from this.
I'm sure you understand, and we look forward to seeing you post your formulas/macros in your posts for the searching benefit of all.
Thanks again for all your hard work here!
I doubt you will find a formula for U, V, and W, as this sounds like a "cutting stock problem" which doesn't have a neat and easy algorithm for its solution (Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutting_stock_problem ).
Most Excel solutions that I see for the cutting stock problem involve Solver:
https://www.solver.com/cutting-stock
http://blog.excelmasterseries.com/20...aste-with.html
The basic idea is to compute waste based on where the cuts are made and any other criteria, then call Solver and tell it to minimize waste by changing where the cuts are made subject to the necessary constraints.
As Solver is imperfect at trying every possible solution, and cutting stock is an NP-hard problem, which means the only real way to know you have found the best solution, sometimes the best solution is to program your spreadsheet (through formulas or VBA or your favorite programming language) to try every possible combination of cuts and choose the best solution.
Let us know what part of programming this you get stuck on and we'll help as best we can.
