count text based on criteria and other range

I have two columns, Aging and Place. I want to be able to count how many names are under the criteria "trees" I’ve tried this but it does not work . What I am looking for is something like sumif but instead of sum I want count, something like this =countif(AGING,"trees",COUNT(place)) -- So if aging Column has the word "trees" then it would count the cell in place Column. The way it would be in sumif is =sumif(AGING,"trees",place), but I don’t want sum I want a count . I want the count in the Place column if the word "tree" is in the Aging column .
