    Post Optimizing Wastage

    Hi

I Have 105 Lengths of Different Types of Bar and I want minimize my wastage using excel because i don't want do it manually.

Standard 1 bar's Length is 12 Mtr. and i want to analyse all the variables and want sat of data's (Set of Length) Which Give me minimum Wastage with different types of bar.

So How can I Use Excel to minimize Wastage?

This appears to be a variation of a cutting stock problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutting_stock_problem ). Most Excel solutions use the built in Solver:

Looking at your uploaded file where cut length is given with up-till 14 decimals I do wonder what would you use for cutting and perhaps you should include cut size as well.

Sorry For Inconvenience But I Have Gotten That Cutting Length with Formulas SO thats why Its in 14 Decimal.

But We Just Have to take only till 2 Decimal.

That's Why I have Uploaded new Excel Sheet with Cutting Length with 2 Decimal.

Please Review it and Help me with Solution....

I am Looking forward to it....

    Re: Optimizing Wastage

Solver can be set up a bit differently i.e. one sets up a yield patter for all combinations of lengths that adds up to or are less than standard length of the bar. This will give you the optimal solution.

But depending on the number of different lengths it may take quite a while to build/setup the model and if the stock length is changed or the size of length(s) are changed the model must be rebuild.

Another option is running soilver in a loop using VBA. The problem with this solution is that one get a sub-optimal solution. As solver starts to optimize results it produces the best solution first but as the number of lengths decreases solver choices to minimize waste gets less and less.

But this model is easy to set up and you can change the list lengths and the stock rod length without rebuilding your model but as I said it will not be as accurate as the "All_in_one_go" mode

This link contains two different solver model, one is the sub-optimal and the other is "All_in_one_go" setup for solver.

    https://www.excelforum.com/tips-and-...t-cutting.html

When will two models like this start to diverge? I really don't know one probably must build the "All_in_one_go" and do a test comparing result to the "Solver_suboptimal" result.

If the number of lengths produced is more than the required number (will only happen in "All_in_one_go" model) how should the excess be treated? As waste or something that can be used at a latter date?

This is shown in the next link:
