Filter has two of the same

I have a list of song titles. If filter for "Longfellow Serenade". My filter shows two identical "Longfellow Serenade"s. I select both.

My sheet now shows two lines, with "Longfellow Serenade" on each line. I check each one for blanks, special characters, etc. They're both identical. But, to be sure, I copy the top one and paste it into the second one. So, my filter list should have only 1 "Longfellow Serenade" to select now, right?

Nope, filter list shows two identical "Longfellow Serenade"s.

I select the first; the two lines I got earlier appear. Hmmm!
    I clear the filter.

I filter again, filter list shows two identical "Longfellow Serenade"s.
I select the second; the two lines I got earlier appear. Hmmm! What's going on here?

My worksheet has 24K lines, if I delete lines, the problem disappears, so it's not going to help to post an example.

    Any ideas?
    I know I'm not stupid, but I suspect I'm a lot stupider than I think I am

Based on your description it sounds like you need to CUT & PASTE not Copy & paste for your test. Cut will remove 1 of the entries and leave the cell blank. Or, why don't you just delete the extra entry in the 1st place?
Uploading an attachment will assist Forum Members in finding the correct Solution for you. Create a dummy worksheet if necessary, add your start data and show where / what your expected results should be. TO ADD A FILE:

Go to 'Advanced. click on 'Manage Attachments. Select 'Browse & Choose your file, Select 'Upload and then close the Attachment window.

For "why don't you just delete the extra entry in the 1st place?" the full data set is all the MP3s I have on each of my CDs, to see where I have duplicates. In this case it's in the "Title" column only. I'm slowly weeding through and deleting the dupes, while trying to make sure I don't delete anything I have only one copy of. So, first level is song title, followed by Artist. I'm using Pivots and filters to fine tune, and happened to notice this filter glitch just this morning. But I've resolved the issue by killing and reestablishing the filter.
