Display a value IF any cell in range contains text

Hi there. This formula I entered in cell A2 does not work …. =SUMIF(A3:A12,"X",A1)

A1 contains $500
I want to display $500 in A2, if the range of A3:A12 contains an X anywhere in that range.

Help please?

You could use something like:

The first will show a 0 if 'X' is not found in the range, while the second will show nothing ("").
