Need help with IF solutions

I am adding Cell A1+A2. The only thing is if the numbers in these cells are either both positive or both negative. I need them to be subtracted, the Max-Min. I have tried a few ways and this is what i ended with so far and still need that last little bit of help.

Normally either A1 or A2 will be negative, and both numbers will be ADDED together. If both numbers are positive or negative then the have to SUBTRACTED. The larger number subtracted by the smaller number.

I don't get this, but maybe try

=ABS(ABS(A1)-ABS(A2))
