How to multiply by a value with a decimal?

    Hi all,

I have what may be a simple question

Basically I have a cost value: 5.2p (GBP currency: pence), I want to multiply a figure such as 20,000, by 0.052p, to figure out a cost saving

My quesiton is how do I write a formula to say multiply by 0.052 (basically convert the 5.2 p to 0.052? is this possible?)

I have multiple cells to do this for and want to automate it.

    Thank you
    Thanks,

    R.

The 5.2p should be in normal UK currency format of £0.052 in which case you can simply have this in A1, and B1 have =A1*20000 or whatever multiplier you want

    Hi Sandtreee,

my starting figure is 5.2p so is there a way i can convert 5.2p to read as 0.052? like when you change the formaty?

    thank you

I agree with the above. It is bad practice having the cost as text
=SUBSTITUTE(A1,"p","")*(B1)/100 but don't advice this approach

you just do exactly what I originally said and remember that the value is in pence or add /100 to get the value in pounds
