Need formula with no duplicates and another criteria

I have a spreadsheet that I need to count names for a certain month without duplicate names in the count. I can't figure out the formula for this. I have attached a simple spreadsheet, but my real spreadsheet has hundreds of entries if that make any difference. Thanks for any help offered on this formula!

Thank you for trying to help, but neither of these links have formulas that will work. I need a formula that will count how many people in August without duplicate names counted. My real spreadsheet has all 12 months and hundreds of names, so if I can get a formula for August, then I can easily manipulate it for each month.
