    Age Books required Total books required for each age grade
    1 5

    I'm sorry but this makes no sense? Have you got a sheet you could attached with a bit more blurb to explain what you are looking to achieve?

    Assuming Age in column A, Book in column B

    In A1

    =IF(A1=A2,"",SUMIF(A:A,A1,B:B))
