Adding together IF Cells

Hi,

I'm trying to put together a spreadsheet for a learning styles questionnaire. There are a list of questions of which the answers can either be 'often' (5 points), 'sometimes' (3 points) or 'seldom'(1 point), with each question being related to a different type of learning style.

I'm trying to set it up so that the user can just put an x in the column for their answer and the spreadsheet will calculate the result for them. So far I've used a formula for each question (e.g. =IF(D2="x", "5", "0") and so on, which works to show the correct score for each question. What I then wanted to do was select each appropriate question result row for each learning style and add them to give the final result for each style. The results in the IF formula columns aren't adding together though- is there a way to make that work?

I hope the above makes sense, it's a bit difficult to explain.

Don't use quotes around the numbers 5 and 0 in your formula - those will turn the numbers into a text value.
