I have
A1 = 2021 - PNL
A2 = 2021 Balance sheet
I need excel UNIQUE formula in b1 to give starting digit part of the text in column A
and 1st alpha character in column C
So result needs to be
B1 = 2021 and C1 = P
B2 = 2021 and c2 = B

If you still have Excel 2010, then you don’t have the UNIQUE function - perhaps you need to update your forum profile to 365.

"YYYY - " then use:
=MID(A2,8,1)
if they don't please supply representative examples.
