Help counting the sum of cells containing letters

I'm trying to compile a simple holiday chart and have a specific cell return a value for a range of cells in a column above containing H as 1 and h as 0.5. I've tried using COUNTIF or COUNTIFS, but I can't get the result I need. Any ideas what I could try?

Just one more question if you don't mind. I'm assuming that the little green triangles in the cells containing this formula indicate that there's no data to count. Is there an easy way to suppress these?

Sorry, I don't know what causing that background error. I'm not getting that with the excel file you provided so I won't be able to determine the cause.
