Extract Year from Date

I have columns of format Date displayed like 22.10.2018 and want to extract the year like 2018 but the function YEAR() returns 1905-07-10. According to the documentation YEAR() applied to a valid Date in Date format should return the year. What am I doing wrong?

Try

=YEAR(SUBSTITUTE(A2,".","/"))

or

=--RIGHT(A1,4)

Just format B2 as general, not date.
