Subtract difference of sums of two columns

First post here so I apologize for any breaches of etiquette. I did a search and didn't find quite what I'm looking for.

To start off, I want Excel to calculate the sum of two columns. I want to automatically subtract the value of the smaller sum from the larger sum. I want that value to display in the same cell where the sum would have displayed if all I did was auto sum. In the same cell for the other column, the one where the sum was smaller, and which was subtracted from the sum of the other column, I want that cell to display nothing. If the sum of both columns is equal, then I would like for both sums to display as if all I had done was an auto sum.

If anybody knows how to do all this in one formula, I'd appreciate the help! Extra appreciation if you explain how the formula works!
