Formatting Cells

I hope someone is able to help me. I am new to using spread sheets and need a little guidance on conditional formatting.

I am doing some data entry. Filling in fields with ether a yes, no or exempt. I've created one set of formatting so that a yes is represented by a 1, a no by a 2 and exempt by 3. As such, the cell highlights in response to the colour as green, red or amber.

I have between 200 and 400 entries and want to be able to create a total cell at the bottom showing how many were a yes (1) a no (2) or exempt (3)... This is where I am stuck! Is it possible to create a conditional format to show how many 1s and 2s etc?

From this I can then work out a percentage. (hopefully)

If your data is in B2:B100 (1,2 or 3), in the cell where you are counting 1's
=COUNTIF(B2:B100, 1)
for 2's
=COUNTIF(B2:B100, 2)
and so forth
