sum(countifs

I've been trying to find a way of using sum(countif with a cell reference rather than typing 'range' ; sum(countif(range,{"criteria1","criteria2"},range,{"criteria3";"criteria4"})

On MS community site link below it was suggested i try and enter the criteria in 2 adjacent columns and then 2 adjacent rows.
This did not seem to work.
Any help or information welcome.
