    Partial Name Lookup?

    Hello,
    I have an issue that sounded straightforward but now finding to be perplexing.

    Have a table of date with Names in the left column, with data going to the right. The attached table is way scaled down from my original data sets. Because of how this formula will be implemented, I cannot use helper columns.

    Need a formula that will look at the first four letters in the Name column (Column B of the attached workbook) and then return the value in Column D (or any other column in the table, just using D as an example)

    I was thinking VLOOKUP but because I am looking for a partial name, its not straightforward. (LEFT function cannot work) Any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

    I would try it with an index/match like so...
    {=INDEX($D$3:$D$9,MATCH("step",LEFT(B3:B9,4),0))}
    this is an array formula so it needs to be activated with ctrl+shift+enter so the {} appear at either end, you cannot add them.

    Vlookup; Say your first 4 characters is in A24

    =VLOOKUP(LEFT(A24,4)&"*",B$3:D$9,3,FALSE)

    Please update your profile to show what version of Excel you are using. If you are using MS365, you can use this formula:

    =XLOOKUP("Step",LEFT($B$3:$B$9,4),$D$3:$D$9,"Not found",0)

    This solution is elegant! I did not know about using the &"*" as a wildcard. And no helper columns needed. Thank you!
